Everything you need to know about Great North Run Day

Mansons Social Mansons 1st September 2019

The Simplyhealth Great North Run is the biggest half marathon in the UK, and whether you’re taking part in the race or just attending to cheer on a loved one it is important to be prepared for the day and know what to expect. With only days to go before the event we have devised some need-to-know information  for the big day.

What is the route for the 2019 race? – Runners will cross the starting line at the central motorway, where they will then continue down the A167, passing Jesmond, Haymarket, Monument and Central station. They will then move out of the city towards Gateshead and Heworth – moving into South Tyneside and completing the race in South Shields.

What time does the Great North Run start? – The preliminary horn will blow at 10.40am marking the beginning of the race. The bag drop for participants will close at 10.05am so make sure you arrive with plenty of time.

Where are the best places to watch the run – The start of the race is a great place to cheer and support your family and friends taking part. If you want to follow the runners in their journey, the Tyne Bridge is another great spot to spectate.

What is the easiest way to get to the starting line – The easiest way to arrive at the start would be to hop on the metro and depart at one of the stations close to the start line. These are: Callerton Parkway, Bank Foot, Kingston Park Regent Centre, Four Lane Ends, Northumberland Park, Heworth, Fellgate, East Bolden or Stadium of Light and take the Metro from the finish back to the start line.

What to wear for the race – It is important to wear clothes that you know will be comfortable in for the run – after all, you will be in them for the majority of the day! Get your comfiest trainers on – one’s that you know won’t rub or give you blisters.

During the run - Make sure to drink little and often – don’t drink too much prior to the run. Music is one of the best motivators in this situation, therefore the ultimate up-beat playlist will help you reach that finish line. Don’t shoot off at the beginning of the race - find a pace that suits you and your energy will carry you through to the end.

ENJOY – Perhaps the most important thing to remember on the Great North Run day is to enjoy yourself! Remember to celebrate and enjoy your achievement with your supporters after the race. This is the day that you have trained immensely for and your hard-work and dedication has paid off!

GOOD LUCK!
