House hunting tips for 2020

Mansons Social Mansons 23rd December 2019

Christmas will soon be over before we know it, and so many buyers will be holding out until 2020 when the festive madness has finished to start looking for a new home. It’s essential that you take your time when viewing a property and make time to visit more than once to give you a better chance of spotting any potential problems.

We’d advise doing your research before buying a home, but we’ve outlined some of our top tips below to think about when you are looking.

Location

Are you familiar with this new neighbourhood? It’s worth visiting a new location a few times to get a feel for the place; it could be a bustling town or somewhere you’re going to get a bit of peace and quiet. It’s also good to check the local amenities, such as schools, doctors, hospitals, and shops to see if you need to travel far for any of these services.

Get a survey

Over 7 million home buyers don’t bother to get a professional property survey when buying a new home. This could leave you with problems in the future if there are serious problems with the property that someone with a trained eye could have spotted. The onus is on you to find out any physical defects with a property before committing, so

What’s the room you spend the most time in?

You don’t want to move into your new home and find that it doesn’t quite fit the way you like to live. If you love to have the family round while you’re cooking in the kitchen, this should be your main focus when viewing the property. Likewise, if you’re one for gathering round the TV and watching your favourite show, you need to make sure that this space is suitable for you.

Ask the seller questions

There’s no harm in asking the seller a few questions whilst you are there to find out a little bit more about the property. Find out how long they have lived there, why they’re moving, what the neighbours are like, and how much the utility bills are. This will give you a good indication if there are any problems with the property.

Think of the future

If this is going to be your forever home, is it the right size for a growing family? Are all of the bedrooms suitable for growing children who might still be staying when they’re adults. If you’re wanting to expand, does the property have space to extend if you wish to do so? It’s good to bear in mind what it might be like in 10 or 20 years time.
