Calling all witches, wizards, and werewolves! Halloween is upon us. Spooktober has finally arrived. While we are all excited to unleash our mystical personalities on the most terrifying night of the year, some things might look different in 2020.
COVID-19 has swept across the world, a devilish curse that is keeping the most powerful of our kind inside of their Haunted Houses. But, by stocking up on pumpkin pies, gelatin brains, and eyeball gobstoppers, you can still enjoy a ghoulishly great evening.
Mansons has put together a beastly list of how you can make Halloween at Home just as spectacular. Here are some of our top tips and tricks:
Lethal lava lamps
It’s time to decorate your evil lair in style with homemade lava lamps. To achieve the ultimate Beetlejuice vibe, all you need is a few materials that we know you’ll already have in your home.
· A smooth sided plastic bottle
· Vegetable oil
· Fizzing tablets (alternatively table salt)
· Food colouring of your choice
Once you’ve got all that you need, the next steps are simple. Fill up your bottle with one quarter of water – then add your vegetable oil until it is almost full. You might have to wait a few minutes until your oil and water separate. From this, add a few drops of your favourite food colouring. Then, break your fizzy tablet in half and drop part of it into the bottle and there you have it!
Turn off the lights and enjoy! Make as many as you’d like and place them around your home. Maybe pop them on your windowsill to impress your neighbours!
Halloween without goodies? No thanks!
Stocking up on sweets is usually an essential part of the plan. However, you might not be roaming the dark streets this month. Despite that, no Halloween is complete without sugary treats to indulge in – so it’s time to get in the kitchen and bring out your inner Gordon Ramsay. He fits with our Halloween theme, right? Terrifying.
There are many things you can make at home in time for the big night. One staple piece is the iconic toffee apple. Here’s a recipe on how you can make eight, because we know one each is never enough…
· 8 red apples
· 400g caster sugar
· 1 tsp lemon juice
· 4 tsp of golden syrup
· Red or black food colouring
· Red or black food glitter (optional)
· 8 strong twigs/lolly sticks
Once you have all you need, grab your apron! Pop your twig/sticks firmly into the stalk-end of each apple and then put a large piece of baking parchment onto a wooden board.
Following this, tip your sugar into a large saucepan and add the lemon juice. Once you’ve done that, add 100ml of water. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sugar has completely dissolved. Make sure you’re swirling the pan to move the sugar around during this process – do not stir!
Then, add your golden syrup and bubble the mixture until it has a hard crack. You can test this by dropping a tiny amount of cold water where it should harden instantly. If this still remains soft, continue to boil for a little bit longer. If you’re confident it is ready, add your food colouring and swirl again. Then you can add your optional glitter and turn off the heat!
When you’re done quickly dip each apple into the toffee. You might have to tip your pan slightly to cover all of it. Lift it out and then place on your baking parchment.
