Landlords and Right to Rent checks

There’s been a lot of discussion of late about right to rent checks and how it affects landlords, such as they now must carry out the latest checks on their tenants – but there has also been quite a bit on confusion; just what are you (as a landlord) supposed to check for and how do we know when documents are counterfeit, etc?

Firstly, the Home Office makes it clear that only people who have “permission, or a right to be in the UK have a right to rent property”[1] can do so – and if you’re a landlord in Birmingham, Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley or Wolverhampton[2]; you should have been carrying out these checks since 1st Dec 2014.

While landlords are assured that these right to rent checks will merely require checks of a passport or biometric residence permit, there can be some best online casino severe consequences if your tenant is found to be an illegal migrant. Landlords may even have to pay a civil penalty of up to £3000 but that will depend on whether it is your first offence or not.
