Kirstey McKenzie, Senior Letting Consultant and Lettings Valuer
How would you describe your experience in lettings?
I have 10 years of experience in lettings, all gained locally, which has given me a strong advantage in the field. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the local market, from accurately valuing properties to effectively negotiating tenancies.
Staying active in the area has also allowed me to build strong relationships with local residents and landlords, which plays a key role in delivering a reliable and personalised service.
What are some of your proudest accomplishments in your career so far?
One of my proudest accomplishments has been progressing to a level where I now offer a consultancy service to landlords. This includes sourcing suitable investment properties, conducting viewings, and providing strategic advice to help them grow and manage their property portfolios within the local area.
It’s incredibly rewarding to use my experience to guide clients in making informed decisions and seeing their investments thrive as a result.
“Being based locally also allows me to build strong relationships with residents, which helps me provide a more personal and informed service.”
What do you do in your current role?
In my current role as a Senior Lettings Consultant, I lead the lettings team and play a key part in driving new business opportunities. My responsibilities include valuing rental properties, securing new instructions, and building strong relationships with landlords.
I also provide tailored advice to help landlords grow and manage their property portfolios, ensuring they achieve long-term returns and success in the local market.
What are the most important factors landlords should consider before renting out their property?
One of the most important factors landlords should consider before renting out their property is choosing a local agent with in-depth knowledge of the area. A local expert can provide accurate rental valuations, advise on demand trends, and help attract reliable tenants more efficiently.
It’s also crucial to work with an agent who offers marketing and service packages tailored to your property type and investment goals. This ensures your property stands out, rents quickly, and delivers strong returns with minimal void periods.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to use my experience to guide clients in making informed decisions and seeing their investments thrive as a result.”
How do you ensure both tenants and landlords are satisfied with the renting process and that everything runs smoothly?
Clear communication and attention to detail are key to ensuring a smooth renting process for both landlords and tenants. I make sure expectations are set from the beginning—whether it’s around rent, responsibilities, or timelines—and that both parties are kept informed throughout.
For landlords, I focus on securing the right tenants, achieving the best rental return, and ensuring their property is managed professionally. For tenants, I ensure the move-in process is smooth, any issues are addressed promptly, and they feel supported throughout their tenancy.
A balanced, transparent approach helps build trust and long-term satisfaction on both sides.
What’s one common misconception tenants have, and how do you help them understand the reality?
A common misconception tenants have is that all maintenance issues will be fixed immediately, regardless of the type or urgency. While we aim to resolve problems as quickly as possible, I explain that some issues may take longer due to contractor availability, the nature of the repair, or the landlord’s approval process.
I help tenants understand the difference between emergency, urgent, and routine issues, and keep them informed every step of the way. By setting realistic expectations and maintaining clear communication, I ensure tenants feel heard and supported while also managing the practical side of property maintenance.
How do you stay connected with the local lettings market and community to provide the best service?
What continues to surprise me is just how much of this job is about people, not just property.
Yes, we deal with bricks and mortar, but every transaction is rooted in someone’s personal story – new beginnings, life changes, aspirations. The emotional side of buying or selling a home can’t be underestimated, and that’s where experience and empathy really come into play.
Being able to guide someone through such a significant moment in their life is what makes this profession so rewarding.
